When a business wants to generate more demand, the instinct is often to start with campaigns. More email, more paid media, more content, more channels. But what happens when the foundations underneath those activities are not there yet?
Building demand generation from scratch is not simply about launching campaigns. It means creating the processes, data, measurement and ways of working that allow marketing activity to become repeatable and commercially meaningful.
The temptation is to build everything at once, but I’ve found that the more important question is often where to start. Do we understand who we are trying to reach? Do marketing and sales have a shared view of what meaningful engagement looks like? Can we measure what is working and, importantly, use that information to make better decisions?
There is also a balance to strike between building the infrastructure and keeping momentum. You do not want to spend months creating the perfect engine before putting anything into market, but scaling activity without the right foundations can simply create more complexity.
At B2B Marketing Live, I’ll be sharing how I approach that challenge in my session, “From Zero to Demand Gen: Building a B2B Marketing Engine from the Ground Up.” I’ll explore what to prioritise when starting from scratch, how to build the foundations without slowing the business down, and what it takes to turn individual campaigns into a scalable marketing engine.
If you’re curious about what it really takes to build a demand generation engine, come and join my session for a real-world case study of how to approach it.
